Art and Design

At our school we believe that art stimulates creativity, curiosity and imagination. Through art the children develop the skill to be able to express a response using an exciting and inventive form.

Art enables the children to communicate what they see, feel and think. They experiment with ideas, their use of colour, texture, form, pattern, materials, and medium. We encourage self and peer evaluation and teach how to foster resilience to improve our techniques so we are able to achieve our goals.

We use sketchbooks to record experience and imagination, to help the children develop their ideas and to show progression in their artistic ability. We encourage children to work on their own and collaborating with others on projects in two and three dimensions and on small and large scales.

We explore ideas and meanings through the work of different artists from different cultures and times and who have worked in a variety of mediums. We respond to the children’s interests and ideas through our project approach and celebrate their achievements. We enter into art events in the wider community.

In each year group we develop skills our skills through self and peer evaluation . Please see our progression of skills below.

Planning and teaching

Art and Design are taught in three terms of the six in a year, with Design Technology being taught in the other three terms.  We teach Art and Design discretely from the other subjects in the school curriculum to ensure that we teach the full range of skills and a wide range of media and materials.
