The English Curriculum is broken down into 3 main areas of learning:
Reading, including word reading (decoding) and comprehension.
Writing, including composition, handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Spoken Language, including listening, questioning and communication skills.

Our Approaches to Teaching English:
Learning to read and write begins with teaching phonics. Phonemes are the individual sounds we make in our language. We teach children phonemes, focusing on hearing and speaking sounds and recognising the sounds a letter (or letters) make. We model blending sounds for reading (sounding out) and segmenting sounds for writing (spelling).
We immerse children in letters and sounds, how they are written and what sound they make through a variety of games and activities involving reading and writing skills. When the sounds are known, ‘sound pots’ are sent home to reinforce letter and sound recognition.
We have a comprehensive reading scheme. When children have learnt some initial sounds, they begin reading books with those recognisable sounds in. These are ‘phonically decodable’ books. Children are also taught to read and spell common exception words. These are words that are not decodable words and do not follow the known phonic rules, for example; the, was. Once children are ready, they begin to read a full range of books. Our reading books are grouped into levels by colour and include non fiction, fiction, plays, and poetry to encourage enjoyment of reading.
Children are well supported with phonics and reading in class by Teaching Assistants. We also regularly assess children’s individual reading skills to ensure they are developing a wide range of strategies and reading for meaning as well as pleasure.
The skills in reading and writing are further developed by making links with the class topic, with a strong focus on reading and writing for meaning and purpose.
